A simple and classic sugar cookie recipe that results in soft and chewy cookies with a perfect cinnamon sugar coating. Ideal for all occasions and easy to decorate.

Ingredients

– 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
– 1 cup granulated sugar
– 1 large egg
– 1 tsp vanilla extract
– 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
– 2 tsp cream of tartar
– 1 tsp baking soda
– 1/2 tsp salt
– 3 tbsp granulated sugar (for rolling)
– 1 tsp ground cinnamon (for rolling)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
4. In a separate bowl, combine flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt.
5. Gradually blend dry ingredients into the wet mixture.
6. In a small bowl, mix 3 tablespoons sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon.
7. Shape dough into walnut-sized balls, roll in cinnamon-sugar mixture.
8. Place on ungreased baking sheet and flatten slightly.
9. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.
10. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

You can decorate these cookies with icing or sprinkles for holidays. Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
