Soft, buttery blonde brownies infused with fresh orange zest and topped with a tangy cream cheese glaze. A refreshing citrus twist on a classic dessert bar.
1 cup unsalted butter, melted
1 1/2 cups light brown sugar, packed
2 tbsp fresh orange zest (approx. 2 oranges)
2 large eggs + 1 egg yolk, room temperature
2 tbsp fresh orange juice
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
— For the Frosting —
4 oz cream cheese, softened
2 tbsp butter, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tbsp fresh orange juice
1 tsp fresh orange zest
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9×9 inch pan with parchment paper.
2. In a large bowl, rub the 2 tbsp orange zest into the brown sugar with your fingers until fragrant.
3. Pour in the melted butter and whisk until smooth.
4. Add eggs, yolk, and 2 tbsp orange juice; whisk until combined.
5. Fold in the flour and salt just until no streaks remain. Do not overmix.
6. Pour batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
7. Bake for 25-30 minutes until edges are golden and center is set but soft.
8. Allow to cool completely in the pan.
9. Whisk frosting ingredients together until smooth and spread over cooled bars.
10. Cut into squares and serve.
Use freshly grated zest for the best flavor; dried zest won’t work well.
Don’t overbake—the center should still look slightly soft when you pull them out.
Store in the refrigerator for a fudgier texture.
