Old-Fashioned Buttermilk Donut Bars

Classic old-fashioned donuts for breakfast.

Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, these traditional buttermilk bar donuts feature a rich brown butter maple glaze.

Ingredients

3 1/2 cups cake flour

2 1/2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

3/4 tsp ground nutmeg

1/4 tsp baking soda

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup salted butter, melted

2 eggs + 1 egg yolk

1 tbsp vanilla extract

3/4 cup buttermilk

4-6 cups oil for frying

Instructions

1. Whisk dry ingredients in a large bowl.

2. In another bowl, whisk sugars, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla.

3. Stir in buttermilk, then fold in dry ingredients.

4. Chill dough for at least 1 hour.

5. Roll out to 3/4 inch thickness and cut into bars.

6. Heat oil to 350°F and fry bars until golden (2 mins per side).

7. Dunk in glaze and let set on a wire rack.

Notes

Use room temperature buttermilk for better mixing.

Do not overmix the dough to keep it tender.

Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
